Student veterans have special place to study, interact with one another
In an effort to help ease the transition from military life to college life, OSU-Tulsa officially opened a Veteran Success Center Tuesday to provide space for student veterans, active military and military-affiliated students to study, relax and foster a sense of community.
President Howard Barnett, Provost Pamela Fry and U.S. Army veteran and student Michelle Jackson cut an orange ribbon to welcome all student military service members to use the facility.
“The Veteran Success Center will help student veterans continue the camaraderie that is so familiar to us and will provide a a service to facilitate our success as we move from the military to college,” Jackson said.
Veterans often have difficulty integrating into the campus community and need support to help them succeed, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability.
Making connections with other student veterans on campus is an important step toward bolstering their sense of belonging and academic success, the report said.
“We have an increasing number of military-affiliated students and student veterans who are looking to earn a degree and pursue their career goals,” Fry said. “We want to do everything we can to make this special population of students feel at home and to meet their needs.”
Although academic counselors have noted growth in the student veteran population in recent years, the number isn’t fully known because students aren’t required to disclose their military status.
The Veteran Success Center opening is part of OSU-Tulsa’s week-long Veterans Day observance.
On Monday, OSU-Tulsa students, faculty and staff planted more than 1,700 U.S. flags on campus at 2 p.m. to honor the American men and women who have lost their lives in military operations during the global war on terrorism.
Located on the northwest corner of John Hope Franklin Boulevard and Greenwood Avenue, ‘Flags for the Fallen’ will remain on display through Nov. 13.
