Dismantling Racism | Facebook Live Series for Parents

In August, Quraysh Ali Lansana, a poet and professor at OSU-Tulsa, will join TulsaKids Magazine for a Facebook Live series designed to help parents understand systemic racism and how to address it with their children. Parents and other community members are invited to ask questions in the comments throughout the Facebook live conversation.

Session 1: Racism 101 | Aug. 4, Noon
An overview of what systemic racism, white privilege and anti-racism.

Session 2: Teens Talk about Racism | Aug. 11, Noon​
Quraysh Ali Lansana will be joined by a small group of teenagers from different schools and backgrounds, who will discuss their experiences and understanding of racism.

Session 3: Racism Toolkit | Aug. 18, Noon
Practical approaches to addressing systemic racism with your kids using art, games, curriculum and other resources.

Dismantling Racism: Online Toolkit for Parents
Along with these three sessions, you will be able to find a Dismantling Racism: Toolkit for Parents online at tulsakids.com. We will provide resources such as books and activities that parents will be able to access at any time, as well as information about the value of a more diverse & inclusive curriculum and how art can be used with kids to help understand difference.

About Quraysh Ali Lansana
Quraysh Ali Lansana earned his MFA from NYU. He is the author of the poetry collections The Walmart Republic (2014); mystic turf (2012), They Shall Run: Harriet Tubman Poems (2004), and Southside Rain (2000); his chapbooks include reluctant minivan (2014), bloodsoil (sooner red) (2009), Greatest Hits: 1995-2005 (2006), and cockroach children: corner poems and street psalms (1995). He has also written three children’s books, including A Gift from Greensboro (Penny Candy Books, 2016) and The Big World (1999). Quraysh is also the editor of eight anthologies and is the last student of Miss Gwendolyn Brooks.
