What's the TRUTH about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre?
What are the consequences of this event a century ago?
What can be done to achieve RECONCILIATION?
What can be learned from other truth and reconciliation efforts?
What can YOU do? What WILL you do?

AMST 3373: Comparative Truth and Reconciliation in the Americas is a Spring 2021 course available to students and the public!

With an emphasis on the relationship between past injustices and contemporary social problems, highlighted topics might include the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Native American boarding schools and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

From instructor Tom Jorsch:

"The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre is at the heart of this course.  We will be studying what happened, why it happened, and the consequences of it a century later.  That’s the truth part of the equation.  The next task is to determine what – if anything – should be done to right any wrongs and establish a just society.  This is the reconciliation part of the equation, for which there are no easy answers.  Injustice toward targeted groups is certainly not unique to Tulsa, so examples of places who have utilized a truth and reconciliation framework like South Africa, Guatemala, Canada, and communities in the US will be studied as models to learn from. Students will consider what they can do as individuals and part of collective efforts to remedy past injustices, and be encouraged to act on their conclusions."

The course is being offered as a Hyflex course, which means participants can attend virtually!

Students can meet with their advisor to enroll and community members can visit bit.ly/3kNcbOh to learn more.
