Comparative Truth & Reconciliation in the Americas Class Begins
Event Date: Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - 4:30pm to 7:15pm Event Details: American Studies 3373
Wednesdays, 4:30-7:10 p.m.
OSU-Tulsa
Or take from anywhere via Zoom and the Hyflex Option
What's the TRUTH about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre?
What are the consequences of this event a century ago?
What can be done to achieve RECONCILIATION?
What can be learned from other truth and reconciliation efforts?
What can YOU do? What WILL you do?
AMST 3373: Comparative Truth and Reconciliation in the Americas is a Spring 2021 course available to students and the public!
With an emphasis on the relationship between past injustices and contemporary social problems, highlighted topics might include the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Native American boarding schools and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
From instructor Tom Jorsch:
"The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre is at the heart of this course. We will be studying what happened, why it happened, and the consequences of it a century later. That’s the truth part of the equation. The next task is to determine what – if anything – should be done to right any wrongs and establish a just society. This is the reconciliation part of the equation, for which there are no easy answers. Injustice toward targeted groups is certainly not unique to Tulsa, so examples of places who have utilized a truth and reconciliation framework like South Africa, Guatemala, Canada, and communities in the US will be studied as models to learn from. Students will consider what they can do as individuals and part of collective efforts to remedy past injustices, and be encouraged to act on their conclusions."
The course is being offered as a Hyflex course, which means participants can attend virtually!
Students can meet with their advisor to enroll and community members can visit bit.ly/3kNcbOh to learn more.

Flash Prose Workshop
Event Date: Monday, January 25, 2021 - 7:00pm to Tuesday, January 26, 2021 - 8:45pm Event Details: Jan. 25
Flash Prose | Led by Cassidy McCants
6-week workshops, $225 to register
A piece of flash fiction is a story stripped down to its essence, usually consisting of no more than 1,000 words. In this generative course, we’ll study contemporary examples of flash fiction and nonfiction, and students will respond to writing prompts in order to create their own original flash prose pieces. We’ll practice saying more with fewer words; we’ll explore language and discover ways to push it to its greatest potential. By the end of the course, students should feel comfortable reading and responding to flash fiction. I also hope we’ll create a generous, nurturing space in which students feel eager to share their work. This will be a place for experimentation and practice.

Virtual Workshop | Data Bytes: Introduction to LaTex/Overleaf
Event Date: Wednesday, January 27, 2021 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm Event Details: Data Bytes are weekly workshops about software tools and improving your research processes. Workshops are offered online and are open to all students and faculty.
Virtual Workshop | Data Bytes - Introduction to LaTex/Overleaf
Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021
3-4:30pm
Introduction to LaTex - LaTeX is a typesetting system for producing technical documents and is an important document standard in a number of disciplines. LaTeX gives authors more flexibility and control than other word processing software, but is less intuitive for first time users. This workshop will cover basic use of LaTeX editors, as well as an introduction to the markup language of LaTeX. Participants will gain a basic understanding of how to use LaTeX to create documents, how to write and format text, and how to format non-standard typesettings such as expressions, equations, and non-Latin scripts. We will use the free Overleaf LaTeX text editor, which does not require installing any software ahead of time.
Please note this is an online event. The online event URL will be sent to you in an email confirming your registration. Register at https://okstate.libcal.com/event/7474589.
Presented by Edmon Low Library Faculty and brought to you by the OSU-Tulsa Library.
