As we near the centennial of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, OSU-Tulsa faculty and staff are invited to participate in a book reading and discussion group about this historical event.
Faculty and staff are invited to read the book, The Burning: The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 by Tim Madigan. OSU-Tulsa will purchase the book and Dr. David Gray, OSU-Tulsa teaching assistant professor in the American studies program, will facilitate three discussion sessions.
The sessions will be held via Zoom from 11 a.m.-noon on March 24 (please note updated time for this session) and 1-2 p.m. April 14 and May 5. If you register, you should plan to participate in all three sessions.
To register for this reading and discussion group, please email tulsa.hr@okstate.edu by March 3, 2021.
Please direct any questions to OSU-Tulsa Human Resources at tulsa.hr@okstate.edu
About Dr. David Gray:
Since joining the History Department and the American Studies Program in 2009, Dr. Gray has taught a wide array of courses on the American past and present. These classes, taught mainly on the OSU-Tulsa campus, blend history, literature, film and other media, and invite students to connect their own experiences to broader societal developments. In some courses, such as “Tulsa’s Public Cultures,” and “The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre,” students explore local histories and their legacies by venturing into the community to visit museums, non-profit organizations, and cultural centers. Beyond OSU, Gray has also served as State Scholar for the Oklahoma Humanities Council’s Smithsonian exhibition, “The Way We Worked,” which toured small towns throughout Oklahoma.
