Flash Prose | Led by Cassidy McCants

6-week workshops, $225 to register

A piece of flash fiction is a story stripped down to its essence, usually consisting of no more than 1,000 words. In this generative course, we’ll study contemporary examples of flash fiction and nonfiction, and students will respond to writing prompts in order to create their own original flash prose pieces. We’ll practice saying more with fewer words; we’ll explore language and discover ways to push it to its greatest potential. By the end of the course, students should feel comfortable reading and responding to flash fiction. I also hope we’ll create a generous, nurturing space in which students feel eager to share their work. This will be a place for experimentation and practice.

Journaling the Journey | Led by Eric Howerton

4-week workshop, $150 to register

In an attempt to work less and live more, philosopher Henry David Thoreau spent two years isolated in a shack in the woods. With little camping experience, author Cheryl Strayed solo hiked the 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to conquer inner demons. And documentarian Morgan Spurlock ate nothing but McDonald’s for 30 days to determine the effects of chronic fast-food consumption on the body. Q: What, if anything, do these three individuals have in common? A: They used a challenge to disrupt everyday patterns and routines, learning more about their character, their values, and the world around them in the process. This class embraces the notion that significant growth and reflection can be generated through experiments on the self that force the mind and/or body into new and unfamiliar territory. Students will be asked to design and commit to a (safe) 8-day experiment and document the experience with daily journal entries. The nature of your experiment is entirely up to you (e.g., living without a cell phone for 8 days; becoming a temporary vegetarian; taking a vow of silence; etc.). Regardless of the experiment you design, your journal entries will ultimately help you draft a 6-10 page essay chronicling the experience and what you learned along the way.

About the instructor: Eric Howerton is a professor of English at OSU with a background in creative writing, composition, and literature. He is also an avid amateur cook, skier, musician, and mushroom forager.

Virtual Workshop | Data Bytes - Data Cleaning with OpenRefine
Wednesday, March 3, 2021
3-4:30pm

If you work with large spreadsheets and have been known to spend hours going cell by cell to find errors, we can show you how to save time and aggravation. OpenRefine is a powerful free tool for working with messy data: cleaning it; transforming it from one format into another; and extending it with web services and external data. OpenRefine always keeps your data private on your own computer until YOU want to share or collaborate. Your private data never leaves your computer unless you want it to. (It works by running a small server on your computer and you use your web browser to interact with it). Participants will download OpenRefine to their own devices and learn by doing.

Please note this is an online event. The online event URL will be sent to you in an email confirming your registration. Register at https://okstate.libcal.com/event/7474846.

About Dr. David Gray:

Since joining the History Department and the American Studies Program in 2009, Dr. Gray has taught a wide array of courses on the American past and present. These classes, taught mainly on the OSU-Tulsa campus, blend history, literature, film and other media, and invite students to connect their own experiences to broader societal developments. In some courses, such as “Tulsa’s Public Cultures,” and “The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre,” students explore local histories and their legacies by venturing into the community to visit museums, non-profit organizations, and cultural centers. Beyond OSU, Gray has also served as State Scholar for the Oklahoma Humanities Council’s Smithsonian exhibition, “The Way We Worked,” which toured small towns throughout Oklahoma.

Courses taught:

  • AMST 4973 American Studies Senior Seminar
  • AMST/ENGL 3813 Work in American Life (Readings in the American Experience)
  • AMST 3823 U.S. as Business Culture
  • AMST 3950 The Tulsa Race Massacre
  • AMST 3550 Tulsa’s Public Cultures
  • AMST/ENGL 3813 America in Transition (Readings in the American Experience)
  • AMST 3253 Globalization and American Culture
  • AMST 3513 Film and American Society
  • AMST 3950 America’s Dystopian Futures
