Morning Altars
Healing and Reconciliation Using Nature, Art and Ritual

Virtual Workshop
Saturday, April 10
10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Register Now

OSU-Tulsa will host an interactive virtual workshop with author and artist Day Schildkret in which participants perform a seven-step “Morning Altar” ritual to encourage healing and recovery from trauma, including community and generational trauma.

Participating in the Interactive Workshop

Participants of the event will work with Schildkret to create their own Morning Altar out of leaves, berries, bark, flowers and other elements of nature from their own parks, stoops and backyards. The altars are made from arranging these elements in patterns and reflecting on how recycling objects, colors, textures and shapes from nature and the community can create new forms of beauty and memory.

Personal and Community Healing

“Trauma is often personal – but as we approach the centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre, there’s a lot of conversation about community and generational trauma as well,” said Nekki Reagan-Neely, assistant vice president for community engagement and student services at OSU-Tulsa. “We hope this event can help people heal from any source of trauma and reconcile with the ongoing impact of the Massacre.”

This workshop is part of OSU-Tulsa’s 100 Points of Truth and Transformation, which offers 100 opportunities for students and the public to connect with the truth of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and be inspired toward transformative justice.

About Day Schildkret

Day Schildkret is an internationally renowned artist and the author of “Morning Altars: A 7-Step Practice to Nourish Your Spirit through Nature, Art and Ritual.” These altars have been featured in BuzzFeed, Vice, Vox and Spirituality & Health Magazine. His next book, “Hello, Goodbye.: New Rituals for Times of Loss, Celebration and Change” will be published in autumn 2021. Images of his Morning Altars can be found on his FacebookInstagram and website.

Bioresorbable Metals - A Panacea for Regenerative Medicine

Prashant N. Kumta,
Swanson School of Engineering and School of Dental Medicine,
University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Wednesday, April 21, 2021 | 11am - 12pm | Platform - Zoom Meeting

Abstract: Tissue engineering and nanotechnology are synonymous in transforming the biomaterials field. New bioresorbable materials have emerged with unprecedented beneficial outcomes for a variety of tissue engineering applications. Ideal bioresorbable ‘smart’ scaffolds and implants enabling soft and hard tissue regeneration still remain elusive. In particular, critical sized segmental bone and tracheal defect healing, reconstruction and regeneration still presents major challenges. Bioresorbable metals are a new exemplar in biodegradable systems. This presentation will discuss the efforts to engender bioresorbable metallic scaffolds and strategies to generate devices with tailored multifunctional load bearing and ultra-high ductility (UHD) attributes demonstrating the potential for achieving mineralized tissue regeneration and tracheal healing, reconstruction as well asrestoration. Results of the in-vitro and invivo assessment in relevant animal models will be presented and discussed highlighting the efficacy of these systems offering a palette of revolutionary clinically relevant treatment options for myriad debilitating traumatic bone and tracheal related injuries and ailments.

Workshop Description:

Have you always wanted to write a children’s picture book? Do you have an idea, but don’t know how to turn it into a story? What about illustrations? This four-week workshop will move you from the kernel of an idea to the text for a complete children’s book. We’ll also discuss the importance of illustration, whether you’re an illustrator or not, and de-mystify some of the pesky preconceptions about the number of pages and word count.

About the instructor:

Betty Selakovich Casey is the author/illustrator of three children’s books, MAY FINDS HER WAY, THAT IS A HAT, which was a 2015 Best Books of the Year Finalist by Forward Review, and THE PRINCE OF THE PRAIRIE (RoadRunner Press). MAY FINDS HER WAY received a “thumbs up” from the Iditarod Education Director, was a Spur Award Finalist, and a 2016 Zane-Bloser Recommended Read Aloud Book. Betty is a part-time artist when she can find the time, and is editor/associate publisher of TulsaKids Magazine, an award-winning parenting publication.

Workshop Description:

This course examines the history of Tulsa’s Greenwood District from it’s pre-statehood beginnings to its many renaissances, including the present day. Coined “Black Wall Street” by educator and historian Booker T. Washington, Greenwood was the most economically vibrant Black community in the United States for years, in spite of Oklahoma’s brutal segregation laws. Though that entrenched racial divide continues to exist, Black Wall Street is thriving once again.

Guest lecturers from Black community leaders and field trips to significant landmarks will reinforce classroom learning. The course will culminate with community based projects that explore Greenwood then and now. There were many significant factors that contributed to both its rise and destruction.
