(Rain Location: Main Hall Commons)
Campus Map
The Tulsa Race Massacre took place on May 31 and June 1, 1921, when a white mob attacked and destroyed Tulsa’s prosperous Black Greenwood District.
“5:08 – A Sunrise Vigil” will mark the exact time on the morning of June 1 when witnesses recount hearing a train whistle or similar sound, which was interpreted as a signal for the full invasion of the Greenwood District to begin.
The vigil is open to all OSU students, faculty and staff, as well as the public. Participants will hear brief remarks and readings of statements from survivors, then have space to share their thoughts or remain in silent contemplation and remembrance. Attendees who wish to sit are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket.
The OSU-Tulsa campus is located on part of of the more than 35 blocks of Black-owned homes and businesses that were destroyed during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Up to 300 lives were lost during the massacre, with thousands more injured and left homeless. The Ellis Walker Woods Memorial is dedicated to the first principal of Booker T. Washington High School, who provided assistance and shelter to survivors at the school.
The vigil, part of 100 Points of Truth and Transformation, will also be streamed live on OSU-Tulsa's Facebook page.
Parking is free and open on the OSU-Tulsa campus. The closest parking lot to the Ellis Walker Woods Memorial is Lot B.

Africans in the Americas: From Forced Migrations to the African Diaspora
How is it that the largest Black population outside of Africa is in Brazil? More than 10 million slaves were forcefully migrated to South and Central America and the Caribbean, while just under half a million arrived to the U.S. How does this recognition guide our grasp of slavery and its legacies? How is our contemporary understanding of race and racism influenced by the historic flows of African-descended peoples North and South? This seminar takes a brief journey through the multiple and varied great migrations of Black peoples throughout the Americas, via a focus on slavery and emancipation. We explore the creation of the African diaspora, mapping the linkage between past and present, North and South, history and future.
Instructors:
v John W. Franklin, Senior Manager Emeritus, Office of External Affairs, Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian Museum
v Dr. Erica Townsend-Bell, Director, Center for Africana Studies and Associate Professor of Political Science, OSU
Dates: Wednesday, June 2nd and Wednesday, June 16th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Modality: Virtual Seminar

About Heels for Words
Heels for Words began as a class project led by the OSU-Tulsa Communication Sciences and Disorders graduate class of 2013. Now in its ninth year, the primary goal of the Heels for Words project is to raise awareness of aphasia.
Aphasia is an impairment of language that limits a person’s ability to understand, speak, read and write. It occurs as a result of brain injury, such as stroke, head trauma, brain tumors, or infections. While aphasia can steal words, it does not affect intelligence or competence.
Heels for Words provides funding for Cowboy Aphasia Camp, an annual treatment experience for people with aphasia, and a training opportunity for graduate speech-language pathology students. These events build a bridge between those with aphasia and the community in which they live. We believe this can lead to more meaningful lives for both those challenged by aphasia and members of the community. By participating in Heels for Words, you are taking steps to raise awareness of aphasia!

About the Film
OETA's documentary film Tulsa Race Massacre: 100 Years Later covers the rise of Black Wall Street, the devastation wrought during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and the dedication of contemporary creatives to build a new legacy.
Exploring the events that took place in Tulsa on the Greenwood District (“Black Wall Street”) on May 31, 1921, through media is an opportunity for families and communities to engage in historical thinking, art, and media-literacy building activities. OETA’s documentary of the unfortunate events provides historical context, firsthand accounts, along with other sources that speak to what Greenwood was at its height and what it is today – striving to recreate that sense of economic prosperity and empowerment. Throughout the documentary, art from the various art worlds is woven in to interpret the events of the past and to inspire a more inclusive and equitable future for all Oklahomans.
About the Event
Following the film screening, there will be a live discussion panel with the Center for Public Life at OSU-Tulsa Equity Fellows.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Register at bit.ly/cplfilmscreening.
