Census & RFPs | Virtual Workshop

Thursday, Oct. 7
10 a.m.-12 p.m.
One way communities can grow is by attracting and expanding businesses and residents. However, responding to a Request for Proposals (RFPs) from potential businesses or critical infrastructure grants can be a daunting task. Nevertheless, it is still a critical component in attracting businesses, funding and the people you want in your location.
Learn how to find the data you need to put your community in the best light at this free, two-hour interactive workshop with direct applications for business recruitment and developments in your community.
If you know nothing about RFPs and want to learn about incentive programs, new programs from Commerce, recent laws that affect businesses, the latest tips on Census and redistricting, then this workshop would be helpful to you.
Workshops include a brief overview of the RFP and site selection processes, followed by a hands-on tutorial with Oklahoma Department of Commerce researchers on sources, databases, and strategies to help you fill out RFPs, grants or other data needs for your community.
Please note this is an online event. Registration is required. Please register in advance online.

About the instructor
Saira Nadeem graduated from the University of Houston with a MFA in Fiction in 2019. Shortly afterwards, she gave birth to her first son – who looks like his father from Kentucky, but carries his Pakistani grandfather’s name. Her life has been a true testament to living between two different worlds and she shares many of these raw experiences through her stories.
Before committing herself to writing, Saira taught undergraduate students how to sell at the #1 sales program in the nation. She has a knack for editing resumes and helping people land their dream jobs.
Saira comes from a line of women that disobeyed the rules that were set for them and did not regret it. Because of this, her mission is to make a positive impact in the South Asian community by sparking conversation around cultural issues that disproportionately affect young girls.

Cleaning data, whether it is your own or someone else's, is usually the most difficult and painstaking part of data analysis. In spreadsheets it may involve going cell by cell to look for errors and inconsistencies followed by cutting and pasting which can also introduce errors.
In this workshop, we will show you how to use R to clean, reformat and subset data quickly and without introducing the errors that Excel can be prone to. We will use real life messy weather data to demonstrate how to use the power of R to arrive at a clean and manageable data set.

Resume Storytelling Workshop
Event Date: Monday, October 18, 2021 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm Event Details:
This workshop will be Monday, Oct. 18 from 7-9 p.m. at OSU-Tulsa.
The average recruiter spends 6 seconds reviewing a resume before deciding if an applicant is a good fit for the role. Is your resume doing a good job of attracting the attention of future employers? Is it giving insight into who you are as a person and what you are looking to accomplish? If not – then we can make your resume work a little harder to help you land that dream job.
A resume that tells a clear story is the key to success in the job search. However, most of us aren’t accustomed to telling stories through a single page filled with bullet points. This workshop will teach you the skills you need to summarize your experiences and weave your personal narrative into every line.
Each student will leave with personalized feedback that will turn them into the main character of their resume.

In this workshop we will explore what makes data "tidy" beginning with good practices for setting up spreadsheets using historical weather data from the OSU Agricultural Research Station that is being curated for use by the OSU Library.
We will then explain why R is the right tool for data cleaning, visualization and analysis and discuss the advantages of learning how to use this powerful tool rather than be frustrated by the limitations of Excel.

Start Your Novel Workshop
Event Date: Saturday, October 23, 2021 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm Event Details:
This workshop will be Saturday, Oct. 23 from 2-4 p.m. at OSU-Tulsa.
The goal of this workshop is simple--getting you going on a novel that keeps going. Starting, some say, is the easy part. But starting a novel that you'll actually finish is a whole other kettle of fish, one that retains an air of mystery even to well-published veterans of the art.
We'll try to peer into that mystery in this two day course, examining a number of particularly successful novel openings, both past and present, as well as discussing strategies for getting oneself started (sometimes starting *is* the hard part!), and then working on a number of exercises.
Hopefully, by the end, students will have the opening of their first novel.

Visualization of data is easy to do in R. Graphs can be built layer by layer with as much detail as necessary using a variety of plot types, some which are not available in Excel. Once you have created your graphs and made them look professional, it is particularly convenient to be able to save the scripts and reproduce them with new data sets. The last of our data series will again use the OSU weather data to show how easy it is to make terrific looking visualizations in R.
