Monday, Jan. 10, 7-9 p.m.

Successful personal essays transform lived experiences into literature. One way to achieve this is through deliberate structure choices, such as the use of understory—the emotional undercurrent, or arc, that propels an essay forward. In this one-night class, we will read several short-form published works, identify how authors use understory to establish emotional investment with readers, and discuss why these choices are integral to the most compelling personal essays.

Celebration of Sound: Public Domain Day | Virtual Celebration
Event Date: Thursday, January 20, 2022 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm Event Details: Celebration of Sound: Public Domain Day | Virtual Celebration
Jan. 20
3-4 p.m.
On Jan. 20, organizations from across the Open world will honor the treasure trove of works published in 1926 that will enter the public domain this year. The public domain will grow richer with canonical works from authors like Hemingway, Faulkner and Dorothy Parker, silent film classics like Nanook of the North, and beloved children’s stories about Winnie-the Pooh and the Hundred Acre woods, becoming freely available to all.
Due to the recently enacted Music Modernization Act in the U.S., approximately 400,000 sound recordings from the pre-1923 era will join the public domain for the first time. That’s why this year our theme is a Celebration of Sound.
This virtual party features a keynote from Senator Ron Wyden, champion of the Music Modernization Act, and a host of musical acts, dancers, historians, librarians, academics, activists and other leaders from the Open world! This event will explore the rich historical context of recorded sound from its earliest days, including early jazz and blues, classical, and spoken word recordings reflecting important political and social issues of the era.
SPARC, of which OSU is a member, is proud to co-sponsor the event again this year. The event is organized by the Internet Archive, and additional sponsoring organizations include Creative Commons, Library Futures, Authors Alliance, the Bioheritage Diversity Library, Public Knowledge, ARSC, the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain, and the Music Library Association.
Join the event here.
Please note this is an online event. Registration is required for this event. The online event URL will be sent to you in an email confirming your registration. Presented by Edmon Low Library Faculty and brought to you by the OSU-Tulsa Library.

Flash Prose Virtual Workshop Begins
Event Date: Monday, January 24, 2022 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm Event Details: Flash Prose | 4-week workshop
Jan. 24, Jan. 31, Feb. 7, & Feb. 14 | 7-9 p.m.
Virtual format
A piece of flash fiction is a story stripped down to its essence, usually consisting of no more than 1,000 words. In this generative course, we’ll study contemporary examples of flash fiction and nonfiction, and students will respond to writing prompts in order to create their own original flash prose pieces. We’ll practice saying more with fewer words; we’ll explore language and discover ways to push it to its greatest potential. By the end of the course, students should feel comfortable reading and responding to flash fiction. I also hope we’ll create a generous, nurturing space in which students feel eager to share their work. This will be a place for experimentation and practice.

The Coalition for Advancing Digital Research and Education (CADRE) will host the CADRE Spring Symposium Series beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The symposia will explore current topics in digital research at Oklahoma State University through monthly speaker presentations followed by moderated question and answer.
Real World Open Science – Researchers are being encouraged to make their data open and their research processes transparent. Funding agencies expect PIs to make data available in public repositories where possible in order to advance scientific processes more quickly and ensure that funded research is well used. There is evidence that advances in knowledge about COVID-19 treatment were accelerated by open sharing of data and fast access to preprints, but adoption of open science/research practices is not universally applauded. What concerns and issues stand in the way of rapid progress toward truly open science? This symposium will discuss advantages of open science and hold a panel discussion about the ways that open science creates both benefits and challenges for individual researchers.
Presenters from the OSU research community will describe the advantages of open data that are cited for both the scientific community and individual researchers, how open science practices improve reproducibility and why data should be as secure as necessary while being as open as possible.
The January Symposium will be held virtually so registration is required. Register for the symposium here.

New & High Frequency Data Products, US Census Bureau
Event Date: Thursday, January 27, 2022 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm Event Details: New and High Frequency Data Products, U.S. Census Bureau
Virtual Workshop
Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022
1-2 p.m.
Speakers: Stephanie Studds; Chief, Economic Indicators Division; U.S. Census Bureau
Learning outcomes: The Census Bureau has recently created a new series of Pulse Surveys. The Small Business Pulse Survey (SBPS) and the Household Pulse Survey were established very quickly to understand and provide insight on the impact of the pandemic on small businesses and households. As a result, Census is now working to continue collecting qualitative statistics on the U.S. economy through new High Frequency Programs. Census has also expanded the Business Formation Statistics (BFS) Program to release data weekly, monthly, and annually. These programs provided significant insight on the U.S. economy during the pandemic. This webinar will provide an overview of the Pulse Surveys and BFS, how the data are being used, and where you can find the data.
This is an event hosted by the U.S. Government Publishing Office. Register to attend the live training webinar here.
Please note this is an online event. Registration is required for this event. The online event URL will be sent to you in an email confirming your registration. Presented by Edmon Low Library Faculty and brought to you by the OSU-Tulsa Library.
