CADRE Symposium - Bringing HUMANities into Computational Research
Event Date: Wednesday, April 13, 2022 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm Event Details: CADRE Symposium - Bringing HUMANities into Computational Research
Wednesday, April 13, 2022
3-4:30 p.m.
Sponsored by the OSU Humanities Initiative
While the humanities are not generally thought of as computational fields, they have an increasing role in advancing technologies in our everyday world. Human analysis of language, for example, can elevate existing technologies for enhanced societal impact and inform the development of new technological affordances for changing the landscape of interdisciplinary research. In the OSU English department, researchers are taking both central and collaborative roles in design, development and evaluation of computational work by applying linguistic insights to increase the accuracy of artificial intelligence and to leverage big data in rapidly tracking language use.
This panel discussion will introduce three such projects at OSU. The first is an NSF-funded intelligent tutoring system for scientific writing. The second was funded by Oklahoma Humanities to identify characteristics of quality paraphrases and contribute to the automatic processing and creation of paraphrased text. The final project is a suite of tools for analyzing language use on social media, developed as a component of a dissertation. The discussion will highlight how applied linguists are expanding the diverse opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration and inserting the HUMANities into computation.

Powerful Movie Moments Workshop Begins
Event Date: Wednesday, April 13, 2022 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm Event Details: Powerful Movie Moments | 4-week workshop
April 13, April 20, April 27, and May 4 from 7-9 p.m.
OSU-Tulsa
All too often, screenplays fall flat because the writer has no idea how to craft powerful movie moments. Movie moments are what you’ll remember years after seeing a film: Tony Curtis racing to meet Marilyn Monroe in the last scenes of Some Like it Hot; the Wicked Witch melting in The Wizard of Oz; the first shark strike in Jaws. If you remember those, then you have an idea of what a great movie moment can do for a film.
The focus of this workshop will be on creating scenes in a script that will make an audience gasp or sob or be dazzled with wonder. Participants may choose to work on one scene from an existing script but the focus will be on developing new scenes through in-class workshops. We will examine several screenplays (provided as attachments) to look at a variety of movie moments that are successful.
Objectives include sharpening your work through learning how to build beats to a movie moment, utilizing visuals as the key aspect of the build, choosing the strongest language in terms of action narrative and dialogue, and taking the greatest advantage of screenplay formatting to craft moments that rise to the most powerful movie moments.
REGISTRATION OPENS SOON

Tuesday, April 19
12-1 p.m.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals are increasingly being used as a framework to categorize and analyze scholarship such as research articles. This session will help participants recognize how research is being categorized by SDG, how to find SDG-related research, and generate a plan for describing and highlighting their own work.
Presenters will:
- Discuss how scholarly publications are being mapped to various SDGs by various parties, how this data is being used, and the opportunities and problems with this approach.
- Illustrate how to use databases such as Scopus and Dimensions to identify SDG-related research
- Demonstrate how SciVal can be used to view and explore SDG-related research at OSU

Honors Award Information Event
Event Date: Wednesday, April 27, 2022 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm Event Details: This is an informational event for OSU-Tulsa faculty to learn more about the new OSU-Tulsa Honors Award.
Honors contracts will be a core part of the expansion of OSU Honors College awards at OSU-Tulsa. An honors contract is a mechanism for adding an "honors dimension" to courses or sections that are not already deemed an honors course. The project should add an academic element to the course by introducing new material or by allowing the student to go into greater depth than normally required in some aspect of the course.
Aditi Grover, OSU-Tulsa honors program coordinator and assistant professor of professional practice in the School of Marketing & International Business will lead the presentation alongside Beverly Morris, director of OSU-Tulsa academic advising.
Learn more about:
- Who is eligible for an honors award?
- Differences between honors awards at OSU-Tulsa and OSU Stillwater
- How to undertake an honors contract
- What kind of projects are appropriate for an honors contract?
