Orange Pride: Linda Raska

Published: Wednesday, April 1, 2020

Linda Raska isn’t used to the spotlight.

“I don’t like too much attention drawn to me,” she said. “When I found out I won this award, I was honored – but surprised.”

As a Faculty Support Services administrative assistant, it’s her job to make sure both resident OSU-Tulsa faculty and commuting faculty from OSU-Stillwater have everything they need to accomplish their tasks and duties.

After 17 years on the job, Raska is the winner of 2020’s first Orange Pride Award for Employee Excellence for going above and beyond to not only help faculty day-to-day, but to anticipate their needs and extend a helping hand whenever possible.

The Importance of Education

Growing up, Raska sought a career in the world of education. Before she graduated from Bishop Kelley High School, she thought about being a kindergarten teacher, but eventually found herself leaning toward a more corporate life as an administrative assistant for several companies.

“I liked the variety,” Raska said. “Each day was different, and I enjoyed finding ways to help.”

Life gave her variety, too.  She got married. She moved around with her husband as he served in the U.S. Navy. Time went on and she never finished her business certificate.

After a decade as a stay at home mother of two daughters, she started to gradually return to the workforce. She worked part-time in the business sector for a few years before deciding it was time for something more.

In 2003, Raska ventured full-time into the world of education after all – at OSU-Tulsa.

“I always knew I wanted to be in education. And here I am,” Raska said. “The environment is so positive. People are here to improve their lives and I get to help them realize their goals.”

Growing Responsibilities

When she first took the job, Raska was supporting just eight resident faculty in Main Hall. Now she supports 23 resident faculty, and the Tulsa-based needs for nearly 50 others based in OSU-Stillwater.

Between ordering supplies, typing up documents and scheduling appointments, meetings and reservations, Raska has plenty to keep her busy. She appreciates the people around her for making her career so pleasant.

“I’ve had the same director, Susan Johnson, my whole career here. She’s been wonderful. And I have been lucky to always have a friendly and reliable counterpart based in North Hall that I can lean on when I need support, too.”

Behind the scenes, Raska helps faculty any way she can, including advice if you ask her.

“As with everything in life, have a positive attitude,” Raska said. “I’ve learned a lot around here just by listening. And don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
