OSU-Tulsa faculty honored with 2021 teaching, research awards
Dr. Dursun Delen, OSU Regents Professor of management science and information systems in the Spears School of Business and Dr. Donita Shaw, professor of reading and literacy education in the College of Education and Human Sciences were honored with OSU-Tulsa’s faculty service awards. The awards are OSU-Tulsa’s highest honors for faculty.
President’s Outstanding Research Award
Delen, who is also the director of research for the OSU Center for Health Systems Innovation and the holder of William S. Spears Endowed Chair in Business Administration, is the recipient of the 2021 OSU-Tulsa President’s Outstanding Research Award. He has been in the field of analytics and data science for over 30 years as a researcher, consultant and professor.
“I am honored and humbled with this prestigious recognition,” Delen said. “I am very happy to see that my work is being recognized in academia and in industry alike, leading to prestigious awards such as this one.”
Delen’s longtime research focus is business analytics and data science. His recent work concentrates on healthcare and medicine, with the goal of discovering new and valid patterns and solutions to chronic diseases through the development of artificial intelligence-based clinical decision support systems. The ultimate goal is to develop intelligent support systems that help medical professionals make faster and more accurate decisions for their patients.
“Data science is expected to be the primary source for a new generation of inventions and innovations in a wide variety of domains, including healthcare and medicine,” Delen said. “The rapidly increasing volume and variety of digitized data coupled with the advancements in computational technologies have created the perfect storm for data science to assume the leading role in the advancement of humanity in the near future.”
President’s Outstanding Teaching Award
Shaw is the recipient of the 2021 OSU-Tulsa President’s Outstanding Teaching Award. After earning her Ph.D. at the University of Kansas, she taught there for 14 years before coming to OSU-Tulsa in 2016.
“I was looking for collaboration when I came to OSU-Tulsa – and I found it,” Shaw said. “My colleagues are just wonderful. The group of faculty I work with is so strong and I’ve been able to thrive and grow so much.”
Shaw primarily teaches educators and aspiring educators. Not only does she have decades of experience in higher education, she also has experience as a teacher for grades one through eight, as well as substitute teaching experience and experience teaching abroad.
“There are so many great professors here,” Shaw said. “Everybody has their own specialty, their own way of communicating knowledge and relating with students – so it’s so humbling to be chosen for this award.”
Each faculty award recipient is given a cash award and a medallion. They also will serve as Grand Marshals at OSU-Tulsa's spring 2022 graduation ceremony.
