Smay named head of Materials Science and Engineering at OSU-Tulsa

Published: Friday, December 10, 2021

Oklahoma State College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT) Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Professor Dr. James Smay has recently been appointed as the new Head of Materials Science and Engineering at OSU-Tulsa. Smay will be taking the place of Dr. Raman Singh, who will retain his role as Associate Dean of Engineering at OSU-Tulsa, but will also be taking over as the Director of the Oklahoma Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).

“I was very excited to take on this new role,” Smay said. “Our previous department heads both established the School of Materials Science and Engineering and produced a thriving student body and research program that includes numerous extramural grants and interactions with industry. In short, I’m very positive about the direction of CEAT and MSE in Tulsa and am honored to contribute to that growth as part of the administration.”

Smay has an extensive background in materials science, direct write manufacturing, colloidal, processing of materials, rheology of complex fluids, and encouraging STEM education in the Native American community.

In his recent research, Smay focuses his efforts on colloidal assembly processes to enable novel devices. His lab, the Smay Lab, is equipped for powder processing, advanced rheological measurement, thermal treatment of ceramics, metals, and polymers, and particle size and zeta potential measurements.

“I have been treated very well at OSU since I joined the faculty in 2002,” Smay said. “Among my many mentors, Russ Rheinhart, former ChE Head; Rob Whitley, former ChE Head; Raj Singh, former MSE Head; Raman Singh, former MSE Head; the late Dean Karl Reid and Dean Paul Tikalsky have all encouraged and facilitated my career and I thank them all.  I look forward to the coming years and reporting about the success of the MSE and HRC faculty. Go Pokes!!”

OSU CEAT congratulates both Dr. Smay and Dr. Singh on their new roles.
