This fall, the Center for Poets and Writers at OSU-Tulsa is offering six in-depth workshops designed for aspiring writers, filmmakers and creatives to sharpen their skills and bring their stories to life.
Whether you’re building fictional worlds, directing a movie on a tight budget or crafting the perfect punchline, these in-person workshops offer expert instruction and practical experience for both new and experienced writers and filmmakers.
Big Worlds in Small Packages: Writing Science Fiction in the Short Form
Tuesdays, Sept. 16 – Oct. 21 | 7–9 PM | $225
Explore the boundless possibilities of sci-fi storytelling in short form. Led by writer and OSU PhD student Robert Warf Burke, this six-week course combines readings from genre icons like Octavia Butler and William Gibson with guided writing exercises. Participants will complete a polished 10–15 page science fiction story and gain tools for future publication.
Foundations of Funny: A Stand-Up Comedy Workshop
Wednesdays, Oct. 1 – Nov. 5 | 7–9 PM | $225
Perfect your comedic voice with Tulsa-based comedian and TEDx speaker Shawna Blake. Over six weeks, students will analyze stand-up performances, write and refine original
jokes and practice delivery. The course culminates in an optional live performance,
showcasing five minutes of polished stand-up material.
Intro to Film Editing
Wednesdays, Oct. 8 – Oct. 29 | 7–9 PM | $300
Discover the fundamentals of post-production editing with Ty Clark, award-winning editor at PURSUIT FILMS. Participants will work with Adobe Premiere
Pro to cut their own version of a scripted scene, gaining hands-on experience with
software, workflow and editing terminology that prepares them for collaborative production
environments.
Intro to the Film Industry
Saturday, Oct. 11 | 10 AM–5 PM | $225
Thinking about breaking into the film business? In this one-day workshop, industry
professionals Dylan Brodie and Stephen Hanan guide participants through the ins and outs of working on a professional set. Learn
the essential skills, protocols and responsibilities of a professional production
assistant and get practical insights into Oklahoma’s growing film industry.
Directing on a Budget
Mondays, Nov. 3 – 17 | 7–9 PM | $225
Learn how to create powerful visual stories without a big budget. Filmmaker and educator Mathew Foss leads this hands-on course in digital video and audio production, screenwriting for shorts and cost-saving production strategies. Ideal for indie filmmakers, podcasters and content creators looking to maximize impact on minimal resources.
Writing Commercial/Popular Fiction
Tuesdays, Nov. 4 – Dec. 2 (skipping Nov. 25) | 7–9 PM | $150
Join USA Today bestselling author Lauren Smith for this four-week course on writing engaging and marketable fiction. Participants
will explore genre trends, develop compelling characters and plots and submit a first
chapter and book summary for critique. Ideal for writers aiming to publish in popular
or genre fiction markets.
